Question about water filters like the Katadyn Hiker Pro and Vario?

I’ve heard some people say those are ALL you need to use on a stream or river to get perfectly clean and healthy water, while some say you still need to boil or use chemicals to kill viruses. Which is right? I don’t want to get sick in the middle of a four or five day trip because the filter didn’t stop viruses or something. I was under the impression that if you used the Katadyn Hiker Pro on any body of water that didn’t have chemicals dumped in it you could drink the water fine without boiling it or anything, is that wrong?

Some water filters will filter out bacteria and viruses and some won’t. Buy what you want and if you buy one that filters out everything trust it if you want.
It’s always safest though, whichever type you buy, to sterilize the water chemically after filtering but use some judgement.
On a low plain with slow moving water in a warm climate you’d be well advised to use a chemical sterilizer.
Water from a fast running mountain stream at high level in a cool climate will often be safe to drink withut even filtering but it’s always best to be on the safe side.
Thousands of people lived well enough drinking stream or well water before modern filters were invented and without chemical sterilizers, living for years on end ilike it, as many millions of people still do in poor countries.
Some get ill, but millions don’t. all their lives. I’ve been to Africa and India and a few more poor places and normally take water sterilizing powder as a present when I visit isolated villages.

Tim’s comment about organisms sinking just isn’t always true in nature although it sometimes is. It’s more often true in a lab when the water is very still, for some kinds of organisms.
Many bacteria live on the surface of still water in ponds and lakes, as do algae as you can see in algal blooms even on the oceans which are much rougher and more agitated than lakes.. Some oceanic plankton lives only on or near the water surface, not deep down. Other types live a bit deeper.
Many lab observations cannot be directly transferred to the outdoors where conditions are different than in the lab..

Katadyn Base Camp vs Katadyn Vario vs Katadyn Hiker Pro water filter?

I’m looking at getting a water filter for backpacking, and the Vario and Base camp caught my eye, but I’ve heard a lot of good about the Hiker pro too. I’ve heard the Base Camp doesn’t work very well on chemicals, and that the Vario has a problem with leaking if you set it to the fast setting and pumping to fast, but I haven’t heard much bad about them beyond that. Overall which of these work the best for the longest and most worth the money?
Also suggest any other water filters you think are better. I’ve heard good things about a few MSR filters too.

They will all do the job. Their filters seem to last a while. I have the Hiker Pro. It’s a good filter, but it is bulky, heavy, gets clogged easy and take time and energy to use. I don’t use it much anymore.
Look into some of the gravity filters that are available. Camelbak and MSR have nice ones that I have heard good things about.
I personally use Aqua Mira drops and filter the water through a bandanna if there are floaters/debris. They are fast, easy, light and get the job done.
