“Glacier Call” Pt 3 by Nutnfancy
PART 3: Going to Plan B could save your life. Sometimes hikers get so focused on accomplishing their wilderness goals, they lose sight of the danger that creeps upon them. They may have over reliance on their fitness levels, their LCBs, and their gear. Conditions change rapidly and can pose lethal threats in high alpine environments. In this Nutnfancy backpack adventure with friend “Cr0cket20,” you will see how we divorce ourselves from ego to make the right call at about 10,000 ft elevation on an icy, foggy, and sleet driven glacier. I try to be ready for about any alpine emergency, carried within my Kelty SuperTioga backpack. But good gear preparation is actually just a small part of the equation. It can’t and won’t compensate for poor judgement and foolishness. As shown in this adventure series, despite excellent rain gear and insulation, in these sleeting and drenching conditions it is impossible to stay dry while on the slope. Core temperatures can plummet rapidly. This consideration along with occasional zero-zero visibility conditions, our tiredness levels while on the steep slope, the passing storms (thunder and lighting too), lack of crampons and ice gear, and approaching darkness made my decision clear as the “Expedition Leader” to change our plans and get out of there. Maybe it was a “Glacier Call” that kept us safe. Descending to our bugout location, we bivouac in the driving rain and sleet. Tents are erected, we don some dry clothes, crank the stoves, and warm food and hot chocolate bring some comfort. This drama was thematic for the trip but along the way we did have fun: discussing gear, observing and showing the beauty, cutting up, and enjoying the antics of our friend and faithful companion “Allie the Mountain Dog,” highly trained for this environment. Along the way you will meet another well-prepared and experienced hiker with his male Great Dane dog that passes us as we break camp. He is summit-bound. We discussed the seriousness of the conditions and our experiences. Trails were buried in feet of snow, making navigation tougher and more exhausting as well. Pausing for several hours of photography, this same hiker passes us on the way down, having made the same call that we did. After finding himself in a whiteout (storm) as we had, he found himself hiking in circles around a rock outcropping. Like us, he made the right decision, called it a day, and retreated immediately to lower elevations. He too lived to hike another day. I give a big thank you to my friend Cr0cket20 who was a great companion on this Nutnfancy memory. You rock! /////////////////// Music: Kevin MacLeod, Torley Wong, and Jimmy G

Great stuff guys!! A buddy of mine and I are heading out hiking Sunday and my son and I are going hiking tomorrow as well as Monday. Can’t wait! Cr0ckt dude… you looked SO wiped when you guys were making camp. I can only imagine the mental and physical strain you were in with those conditions. Great job with making the Plan B call….and of course making hit home safely.

Nutn- Just from a …
Nutn- Just from a creative point of view, I think this is your best effort yet. The interludes of scenery and music between the dialog and trecking shots gave it a nice balance & flow. Really nice selection and use of music throughout too. Of course, its the subject matter, great information, and the cast of characters that keeps me coming back to TNP. This one fit that bill too. But just wanted to give you kudos on the quality of the production. Not bad for an old airforce guy

I’ve camped in the …
I’ve camped in the rain plenty of times. It can be a serious challenge. One of my trick’s was to use a double tarp system; one on the ground and one above the tent. Seemed to work fairly well. I have to say that I slept like a baby with the sound of the rain to fall asleep to. That and the forest always smells incredible after a rain. Staying warm is a challenge though…

I apologize nutnfancy but from what I have seen in these G.C. video’s the 2 of you failed do too inexperience and and lack of physical fitness I will give you credit for your knee and I will give crocket20 credit for his lack of knowledge on proper gear. I live in the mountains at an elevation of 7500 feet and i can quickly tell you both that you need to do alot more research before you attempt another winter run.

I really appreciate you keeping the camera rolling in those nasty conditions. It’s so much easier to record video when it’s sunny, dry, and beautiful, but you guys took what nature gave you and kept a record of all of it. Well done. Great stuff.

Hey nutn….I just wanted to let you know that I have a buddy that is a paraplegic, and I was talking abut you with him last weekend around a camp fire that we had in our backyard and he was telling me about howmuch he loves your vids. He also said that when you do vids like this series, or some of your run and gun vids he loves to watch because he feels like he can experience these amazing and awsome things that he cant do himself through your eyes, or your camera. You are doing amazing things!

What you said is so …
What you said is so true “everything will get soaking wet.” I’ve never (for some reason or another) gone hiking or camping without some rain falling. It doesn’t really matter how much falls, but it always seems that everything gets wet no matter how hard you try to keep it dry. I’ve even used whitewater kayaking dry bags to keep things dry. They work, but the truth is, you will have to open those bags to get your gear; thus getting everything wet.

Very recently a …
Very recently a team mate (who has a lot more experience than I do) told me a way to dry boots overnight: put them in a plastic bag with an opening in it and take it with you inside your sleeping bag. Not sure if it works for heavy hiking boots but for regular combat boots it should do the trick. At the very least you won’t have to put on freezing cold boots in the morning.
Great series of vids, with some good points on surviving vs. being comfy

18:04 That, for me, is the payoff for this kind of backpacking, opening your tent in the morning to that kind of view. Somehow during the night I forget the hard work of the previous day, and just get to wake up to the most breathtaking front yard ever.
These videos have been so breathtaking and inspiring for me. Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Big Respect,

@Vampyreq Probably encoded (as a final product) in x264 or something. Could be 700mb or more.
Hopefully nutn keeps a local copy of every finished video he’s done, but man the dude must have many TB hard drives to fit them all not to mention all the raw footage.

i dont know if you …
i dont know if you think this would be a good idea and tell me if you think it would be dumb, but have you ever taken one of those plastic bags that you can compress the air out so you can carry alot more cloths in a very small package? i thought you could just smash the air? but it seems like if that worked it would be a great way to keep some thing in your carry load dry for the time being…idk ive definatly ran into the same problem with wet cloths and ive been wondering if that would work.
