thanks for the vid. …
thanks for the vid.. Just wanted to point this out, the Katadyn Hiker is a purification system not just a filter, the other cartidge is to help clean the internal workings of the filter, this can be avoided by pre-filtering silt form the water and it’s recomeneded by kat so the other more expensive one isn’t needed, it’s for htose who don’t take care of their equipment. sorry hamm check it out with kat. it’ll sort 750lt and the .oo1 can be sorted by boiling.

great video. FYI …
great video. FYI the Katadyn(Pure) Hiker is a great filter system, but check and you will find that they make a Purifier replacement cartridge for the Katadyn(Pure) hiker. that will turn your filter into a Purifier. the last time i got one of these cartridge’s it cost about $40.00 at REI. Great video by the way. Hamm

You have two …
You have two beautiful dogs. Great video….but I’m not a fan of steripen…especially now after finding out you need rechargeable batteries or Lithium. I guess its good for 3-5day hikes…not for long term use…rechargeable batt have to be conditioned and its a pain….anyways great videos..keep them coming.

Thanks Roz!!! I do …
Thanks Roz!!! I do have a pump type purifier also but the SteriPen is a good addition. Its also good to take on vacations sometimes. We took it with us to Nassau just to be safe. Its a good idea to add some coffee filters in your water system as well. They are light and cost almost nothing.
And thanks for the comment about my girls and not chastising me cause they were not on a leash.
Any chance you can do a review on an FR-1 sometime??

Well done Magnum! …
Well done Magnum! We got ourselves in some trouble on a hike, got lost/ran out of water, very hot/humid day turning to evening… and I realized that it was essential that I throw some type of H2O filtration in my kit. Since we usually only go out for the day I may consider the battery-op Steripen. Thx for showing it! Hey, +1 on China and Nyah. You guys got it goin’ on.

why are dogs always off leash like this at watchung res and round valley res? i have a small dog and can’t go there anymore since he was attacked. the owner’s always say, “oh, my dog’s friendly”, or “i can control them”. please think of others while you enjoy yourself~

Even with the …
Even with the sterilization system, would you still filter the water, boil it, put iodine tabs in it, etc.?

Excellent video …
Excellent video review. I’m also considering doing the SteriPen in addition to the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Glad to know I’m not the only one. FYI, try using Sanyo’s Eneloop NiMH batteries. They remain up to 85% charged if not used for up to a year and supposedly can be recharged up to 1000 times. I also use them for my Apollo and Orbit lanterns from Black Diamond.

Absolutely I think …
Absolutely I think the filter is better then the SteriPen. I basically have it as a redundancy system. If and when the time comes and I make a full BOB for myself AND my wife I would split them up so we each carry one. I’ve already taken it out of my GHB to cut down on weight.
Thanks for the comment and YES the dogs keep me entertained, at all times too.

Good video. The …
Good video. The steripen looks great – don’t you think the filter is better though, fast, no batteries and removes rather than kills the nasties! (Your dogs look like they keep you entertained)

Thanks for the info …
Thanks for the info on the Sanyo’s. I’ve noticed lately that if I DONT set my GPS unit to Lithium batteries and keep it set to Alkaline I get a lot longer run times out of them.
December 29th, 2009 at 4:05 am
Although expensive …
Although expensive lithium batteries are well worth it for the outdoors, they handle the cold weather and keep there charge unlike alkaline and rechargeables, keep a look out for energizer lithiums on sale and buy a boat load of them. However if you still don’t want to use lithium, I’d like to suggest the Sanyo Eneloop range of rechargeables, the self discharge on them is minimal, perfect for keeping in your pack.

The dogs were the center of attraction; Great video! Years ago, cousin and I used to drink directly out of the disserted village spring in that area. The spring was covered by an arched shaped brick enclosure. Never encountered any gastro., problems. Wouldn’t try it nowadays though with all the septic system oversight. Thanks for all the new tech. product reviews old brother. I very much know of the area!!!
