“TALUS” by Nutnfancy (’Summer Snow’ Actual Final Part)

The Summer Snow adventure sadly comes to an end but not until some more adventure ensues. Our hike out continues, crossing streams, snow casms, boulders, talus fields, fallen timber areas, and lots of snow and mud. The scenery continues as well and it was majestic. But the hike is tough, having taken a different route out that added about 3.5 miles to the route…all with no trail. Lots of snow drifts still covered it. The wind kicks up too, gusting to 30+ mph. We press on and I decide to stop at the base of a huge talus slope for a rest break. We heat up some lunch and filter some water out of a fresh glacial water source (awesome water!). LastSuspect has some fun boulder climbing while Allie and I do the work (standard). An osprey hunts the lake not far away and we bid farewell to the lake as we make our way upslope to re-intercept the trail. I break through a snow bank into a hidden creek, getting soaked. We are careful not to sprain an ankle or break a leg in this treacherous section. Pressing on through the many fallen trees and obstacles, we reach the open trail (and check out some other beautiful glacier lakes nearby too). Finally we are rewarded with some downhill, on-trail hiking…piece of cake but lengthy. Allie is a great companion all through it all and we love having her along. And yes, despite my best efforts, she throws another shoe to be lost forever. We grab out cached supplies on the way down and call the adventure complete. This was an awesome experience and family memory and the kind I encourage my TNPrs to make with their own family and friends (and trained dogs too!). “Cutthroat” by Nutnfancy (’Summer Snow’ Actual Pt 5)

Cutthroat is one of my favorite parts in the Summer Snow series. The essence of the whole experience is captured in this “Summer Snow Actual Part 5:” the humor, the peacefulness of this awesome high mountain lake, the serenity of the evening, respect for life, gear talk, and the special time spent with my son LastSuspect. With the wind dying down and sun setting over the mountain, we fish. Time is spent in instruction on spin casting and the techniques needed for this location. Suspect seems to think he’s going to reel in a prize marlin judging by his stance. I had my doubts on our success but I was wrong! We catch a beautiful cutthroat trout which we elect to release since we’d eaten. This process brings drama as I struggle to save this trout’s life from the treble hook (the Leatherman S2 Juice MT saves the day again). The lake comes alive with the trout rising and feeding; many more catches could be possible but we don’t take advantage of it; we use our fish sparingly and hope you do the same. LastSuspect once again weighs in with some “bad air” during tent life which is distressing to me. We are favored by his summary of the trip originally intended only for Nutnfancy family video. Day breaks on day three of the expedition and it’s time to pack up and hike out; always a sad time for us. This was Day Two and Three of our Summer Snow adventure. Backpacking System, Extended Stay by Nutnfancy, Part 3

A detailed review and philosophy about one of Nutnfancys backpacking systems. This system sides with the firepower side of my Mobility vs Firepower thesis i.e. that gear which will provide high capabilities for the given weight and bulk. The gear shown and discussed is designed for establishing a base camp near a high mountain lake about 8 to 15 miles deep into remote and steep Rocky Mountain terrain, at around 10,000 or more elevation. And yes there are still lots of places like this that still exist. This system generally does not represent a good hike through option (ie 10 or so miles hiked each day to different locations) as theres too much weight to be carrying in daily long distance hiking. However if your preference is to bivouac at a remote and secluded area, like Nutnfancy, you may find some new ideas for you here. In this original video series, you will see a selection of Nutnfancys clothing, cooking, water prep and storage, carry, knife and tool, fire making, sleeping, shelter, first aid, nautical (!), rappelling (!), and contingency options. Most of the gear shown has been proven effective for the purposes discussed and every selection is scrutinized for it merits and capabilities for its weight and bulk. Sure this all adds up to a heavy 80+ lb pack but the capabilities that it delivers in the high country will blow all other backpackers systems away (based on decades of real experience) and will provide memorable adventure. Yep, this IS an EIGHT PART series but as you will see there is A LOT to cover and its by request by my faithful subscribers. If youre a hiker, camper, backpacker, or outdoorsman you may find some gear and advice herein thats worthwhile. Its impossible to include every piece of gear and every consideration in the series so there might be a few omissions in the seriesI did the best I could! “Frog Serenade” by Nutnfancy (’Summer Snow’ Actual Pt 2)

It would be easy to turn back when we ran into the snow. Most people did. As Summer Snow Part 2 vid picks up, you’ll see how late summer snow occludes the trail and made for some arduous miles of hiking through the unavoidable drifts. Never mind the at-times rocky trail and hill climbing which presents their own challenges to the uncommitted. It seems even on this holiday weekend, few other hikers were willing to push through these drifts (once in the mountain basin, we saw no other people at all). My son LastSuspect surprised me with his hiking commitment and he issued few complaints. Allie the Mountain dog was again an eager and faithful trail companion, researching every opportunity for signs of critters. Along the way we talk of the wilderness mindset, our camping plans (we hiked deeper in then returned to the original lake), preparedness items for these parts, SAWC backpacking realities (which some still do not comprehend because they don’t do this), tent setup and site prep, the bummer of not having a fire (restricted near lakes), cool lighting products, the remote possibilities of bear and camp security, “dogness” care, foot maintenance, and how Snow Sealed boots rock. We also we revel in the majestic scenery we achieved and enjoy the serenade of those high mountain frogs. We even get to hear a moose making funny noises in the lake. Finally the Nutnfancy “base” camp was established. With our Ledge “Recluse” tent setup, bedding arranged, gear stored, Allie cleaned off and everyone fed, it was time to call it a night. “Hike Now, Play Later” by Nutnfancy (’Summer Snow’ Actual Pt 1)

Leave the push-button world behind and come on along for a Nutnfancy backpacking trip. It seems like it’s always a sacrifice to peel away from the world and make it out to my wilderness places. Messages pile up, phones go unanswered, emails fill the inbox, and careers are put aside for awhile. But it’s always worth it and it creates one of those special memorable experiences. I do my best in this series to share it with you. As I mention in many of my vids, a wilderness backpacking adventure is one of my top recommended ways to make memories with your friends and family, instill wilderness confidence, learn about your gear (and yourself), and to “depussify” your children. That’s because it’s hard work and requires planning and lots of effort. Here we hike in about 7 miles on what soon becomes a snow covered, hidden trail. As shown, wading and post holing through 4 foot snow banks will wear you out, especially at high elevations. The upside to to this difficulty was the complete isolation we quickly achieved on this trip; we saw no one else in the three days we were up there and we owned the basin (though in warmer days this is a very high use area). With a steady but deliberate pace we reach a gorgeous high mountain lake, still partially frozen from the long winter. It is serene and beautiful. On the trail in this Part 1 of “Summer Snow Actual” I discuss trekking poles, backpacks, boots, gaitors, teaching your kids to hike, dog training, and other backpacking subjects. LastSuspect, my youngest son, steps up to the challenge and with very little complaining, turns out to be a great hiking companion for Allie and I. “Glacier Call” Pt 3 by Nutnfancy

PART 3: Going to Plan B could save your life. Sometimes hikers get so focused on accomplishing their wilderness goals, they lose sight of the danger that creeps upon them. They may have over reliance on their fitness levels, their LCBs, and their gear. Conditions change rapidly and can pose lethal threats in high alpine environments. In this Nutnfancy backpack adventure with friend “Cr0cket20,” you will see how we divorce ourselves from ego to make the right call at about 10,000 ft elevation on an icy, foggy, and sleet driven glacier. I try to be ready for about any alpine emergency, carried within my Kelty SuperTioga backpack. But good gear preparation is actually just a small part of the equation. It can’t and won’t compensate for poor judgement and foolishness. As shown in this adventure series, despite excellent rain gear and insulation, in these sleeting and drenching conditions it is impossible to stay dry while on the slope. Core temperatures can plummet rapidly. This consideration along with occasional zero-zero visibility conditions, our tiredness levels while on the steep slope, the passing storms (thunder and lighting too), lack of crampons and ice gear, and approaching darkness made my decision clear as the “Expedition Leader” to change our plans and get out of there. Maybe it was a “Glacier Call” that kept us safe. Descending to our bugout location, we bivouac in the driving rain and sleet. Tents are erected, we don some dry clothes, crank the stoves, and warm food and hot chocolate bring some comfort. This drama was thematic for the trip but along the way we did have fun: discussing gear, observing and showing the beauty, cutting up, and enjoying the antics of our friend and faithful companion “Allie the Mountain Dog,” highly trained for this environment. Along the way you will meet another well-prepared and experienced hiker with his male Great Dane dog that passes us as we break camp. He is summit-bound. We discussed the seriousness of the conditions and our experiences. Trails were buried in feet of snow, making navigation tougher and more exhausting as well. Pausing for several hours of photography, this same hiker passes us on the way down, having made the same call that we did. After finding himself in a whiteout (storm) as we had, he found himself hiking in circles around a rock outcropping. Like us, he made the right decision, called it a day, and retreated immediately to lower elevations. He too lived to hike another day. Cagle Rocks – Crow Mountain Part 1

We set out to find the Indian paintings at Cagle Rocks, but found them to be ruined. We capture these videos of our adventures to share the natural beauty of Arkansas. We are a group of friends and family that have a common interest in exploring new places and I am always keeping my ear open for a new area to visit. In organizing these trips I have provided the equipment needed to make it in and out of the woods safely. However, if anything were to ever go wrong then we have contingencies set in place. Something to consider, however far we have to go to shoot our videos the distance is doubled, because of camera set up and back tracking. Usually we will scout ahead to find a good spot to set up a camera, set it up, and walk back to the group to catch the shot. In some cases we will do this with 2 cameras making the job even more tiresome. This is our first visit to Falling Water waterfalls in the Ozark Mountains. Featuring music from Lady Gaga. We capture these videos of our adventures to share the natural beauty of Arkansas.
