On any long distance hike where you can’t carry enough water it’s important you have some way of purifying your water. Boiling water is the most reliable way but also the most inefficient and time consuming way. If you don’t like the taste of tablets and chemicals, a water filtration system is the next best choice. We chose the Katadyn Vario and tested it on our 28 mile, 3 day hike on the AT, Appalachian Trail. Very fast and efficient.

Drinking from a toilet is not something we recommend. But at Outer Edge, our remit is to push things to the limit, even when it comes to hydration. So keep an eye out for a future video installment where Outer Edge editors Pat Kinsella and Chris Ord decide to test the claim that a new water filtration ’straw’ is good enough to drink from the dunny. Suck it up fellas!
